Even before the end of the Second World War, the Third Reich was the inspiration for many films, both Axis and Allied. Post-war (and today still) the period inspired countless screenplays on both sides of the Atlantic. In our film inspired tours, we consider not just classic screenplays but also the historical realities behind them.

“Where Eagles Dare” and Salzburg

In 1967, the bestselling author Alastair MacLean wrote his most famous book, “Where Eagles Dare”. Simultaneously he wrote a screenplay specifically for Richard Burton to star in. The story concerns a team of Allied agents who attempt to free an American General who has been captured and is being held in an impregnable fortress in the Alps – the “Schloss Adler” (The Castle of Eagles). His rescue is of the highest importance as he is involved with the planning for D-Day, the invasion of Normandy. Schloss Hohenwerfen

Directed by Brian G Hutton with a powerful score by legendary composer Ron Godwin and with a strong supporting cast including Clint Eastwood and Ingrid Pitt the film is widely considered a classic of the genre.

Although the book and film are fictional, the Allies did indeed parachute agents into occupied Europe and Nazi Germany. We consider the role of the SOE (Special Operations Executive), the OSS (Office of Strategic Services) and German counterintelligence – the Abwehr and Sicherheitsdienst, the infamous SD.

In this tour we visit the Austrian Alps and Schloss Hohenwerfen, a Medieval fortress, where large parts of the film were shot. In the castle we take a guided tour that explains the history of the site and architecture in detail. Visitors also have the chance to witness a falconry display inside the castle, against a stunning alpine backdrop.

Afterwards visitors are free to explore Salzburg, city of Mozart and a UNESCO World Heritage site. (Entrance to Salzburg attractions are not included in the price.

"Das Boot"

In1981 German director Wolfgang Petersen shot a film that has since become something of a screen classic - "Das Boot". The film was adapted from a novel of the same name by Lothar-Günther Buchheim, who served as a naval war correspondent in the Kriegsmarine in WW2. The film is the story of a single mission of one World War II U-boat, U-96, and its crew. The story is based on an amalgamation of the exploits of the real U-96, a Type VIIC-class U-boat commanded by Heinrich Lehmann-Willenbrock, one of Germany's top U-boat "aces" during the war.

On this tour we visit the actual sets that were used in the filming of "Das Boot" at Bavaria Film Studios. As well as seeing the exactly reproduced interior of U-96, the tour also visits several other film sets, such as "The Baader-Meinhof Complex" . The tour also looks at sets from "Asterix and Obelix" as well as the new "Vicki the Viking" film, so you can bring the kids as well. Whilst on the tour, visitors get a chance to star in their film, which gives fascinating insights into some of the realities of film making. This is the ideal accompaniment to our "Secret Weapons" tour which examines original German submarines in the Deutsches Museum. Take both and save €5

Cost: €40. Minimum number of participants: 4. Groups of less than 4 by negotiation only.
