Whilst studying books or film about the Nazi period it can be difficult to see beyond an image that was carefully managed and manufactured. The mundane realities of everyday life are often difficult to perceive, although if one looks hard enough these traces can still be seen today.  This tour would be suited to students of whatever level as well as those wishing to further flesh out their knowledge of this period. Note: The rise of the NSDAP is covered in detail in our "Red Flags to Brown Shirts" tour. It is assumed that participants in this tour have either taken the other tour or have some prior knowledge.

On this tour you will learn about:

  • Chaos and subversion in Weimar Munich

  • Popular culture in the Third Reich

  • Civil defence and the effects of bombing

  • The “Meisterschule für Mode”: fashion 1933-45

  • The effects of rationing (You get to sample some period style products)

  • Nazi social housing projects

  • Women and children: changing priorities

  • “Justice” and persecution

  • Resistance movements

  • Nach dem Krieg/Nach dem Sieg?: Post-war reconstruction – fantasy and reality

We also make a visit to the Munich Stadt Museum which has a very good exhibition on this period. (Closed Mondays)

Memorial dedicated to the memory of the "White Rose". The resistance group, which consisted of a number of students and one of their lecturers were very active producing anti-Nazi laeflets. A number of people - perhaps most famously Hans and Sophie Scholl - were tried and executed for treason.

Tour lasts around a minimum of 3½ hours. However, we go at your pace and spend as long as you want at each location.
